LGBTQIA+ Counseling

Being gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans, questioning, intersex, asexual+ is normal and healthy.

It is not fringe or unusual and you do not need therapy because you identify as gay, lesbian, bisexual, pansexual,  or asexual. Living in a world that does not often validate who you are or your experiences causes challenges and distress.

Living and working in environments that are aggressive and hostile towards who you are or erases your existence causes pain and discomfort.

Due to all of this, there are unique challenges and pressures that you encounter due to being part of the queer community.

Gay affirming counseling recognizes those challenges and also how your life and your psychological health blossoms when you are living an authentic life and living out your truth.

“I took a long time to come out because no one in my life was gay, or anything like that. I’m feeling so much better now that I can relax.”

Gender counseling can be highly effective in conjunction with general psychotherapy

As another option, if you’re currently working with a therapist in your network, we find that gender therapy can be highly effective in partnership with general psychotherapy. If you’re interested in having monthly or biweekly gender counseling sessions to supplement your existing therapy regimen, we’re certainly willing to coordinate with you.

I’m looking for someone who will challenge my transgender status or for a clinician who will assess my child to confirm that they’re truly trans.

The main goal of therapy is to get you to trust and embody your most genuine self. Your first appointment includes an initial intake, which is a thorough gender assessment with key questions that will help you explore your identity. And, of course, while not all of the answers are conclusive, they can provide your therapist with a strong idea of what you need and how to get there. Our therapists are invested in providing our trans clients with a safe therapeutic space where affirmation and exploration are key. Our only agenda is to provide you with the tools that will allow you to navigate and discover the identity and lifestyle that will allow you to be most comfortable in your own skin.

I’m concerned about the cost of gender counseling.

If you’re concerned about the cost of therapy, we encourage you to contact us to schedule a free, 20-minute consult. During the consult, we will discuss your needs, the cost of therapy, as well as ideas and resources to get you started on your journey. If cost remains an issue after our initial conversation, we can refer you to trans-affirming therapists in the area who offer counseling services at a reduced cost. In addition, we have guidance for submitting bills to your insurance for reimbursement here.

I want to go to a gender counselor but would prefer to see someone who takes my insurance.

At Arrive Therapy, we have extensive training in gender counseling and trans-affirming approaches—in fact, most of our therapists identify as queer, gender queer, trans, or nonbinary. Because of this degree of experience and specialization, we’re confident that gender counseling at Arrive can get you much farther more quickly, potentially saving you time and frustration in the long run.
